Mammoth Umbra

Mammoth Umbra was first released in the 2010 set Rise of the Eldrazi as an uncommon Aura enchantment. Designed by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, it serves as a key example of the Umbra armor mechanic, which provides a layer of protection to enchanted creatures by sacrificing itself instead of the creature if the creature would be destroyed. The card was selected for inclusion in the 2018 Ultimate Masters set, a high-end compilation intended to celebrate the history of the game by featuring popular or powerful cards with updated printing technology and renewed art.

The original illustration for Mammoth Umbra was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, who leaned into the surreal, cosmic horror aesthetic characteristic of the Eldrazi-themed set. The art depicts a massive, spectral beast looming over a soldier, capturing the feeling of immense, otherworldly scale that defines the set's narrative context. Upon its release in Ultimate Masters, the card was featured with its original artwork, remaining a functional and thematic staple for players who utilize white-mana decks focused on creature longevity and defensive strategies.
