Provenance

Where it came from

Mana Clash was released in 1994 as part of The Dark, the fourth expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast during the early boom of the collectible card game market, this set was designed to explore darker, more gothic themes than the base game. Mechanically, the card represents the high-variance, chaotic nature of early red-aligned magic, forcing both players to flip coins to deal damage to one another.

The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, a prolific illustrator during Magic's early years. Her depiction captures the intense, elemental conflict suggested by the card's name, utilizing the moody, atmospheric style that defined the aesthetic of The Dark. While the card is often remembered for its unpredictable gameplay rather than competitive dominance, it remains a notable example of the experimental design philosophy prevalent in the game's first few years of existence.
