Mana Drain

Mana Drain was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third expansion set for the game, Legends introduced the concept of multicolored cards and legendary creatures, significantly increasing the tactical depth of the burgeoning trading card game. Mana Drain quickly gained notoriety for its immense power, offering players the ability to counter a spell and then utilize that mana during their own next main phase, a mechanic that fundamentally altered high-level play.

The card’s visual identity was crafted by artist Mark Tedin, whose work defined much of the early aesthetic of the game. Tedin’s illustration captures a swirling, ethereal vortex that reflects the card's disruptive function, favoring a surreal, high-fantasy style consistent with the experimental nature of the Legends set. While originally printed as an uncommon, the card's extreme utility and limited print run in the early days of the game solidified its status as a sought-after staple in competitive formats, eventually becoming one of the most iconic counterspells in the history of the game.
