Where it came from
Mana Drain was originally printed in the Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 1994, quickly establishing itself as one of the most powerful counterspells in the game's history. Its ability to counter a spell and subsequently provide a massive mana advantage made it a centerpiece of control decks, leading to its eventual restriction in several tournament formats. The card's enduring status as a staple of high-level play has made it a perennial target for reprinting in specialized sets.
The 'Breaking News' variant, identified by collector number 67, was introduced in the Outlaws of Thunder Junction set. This stylistic treatment reimagines the card with the aesthetic of a sensationalist tabloid newspaper, reflecting the set's western-inspired theme. The design departs from traditional high-fantasy illustrations by utilizing bold, dramatic typography and a journalistic layout, aiming to provide a visually distinct collectible version of a card that has remained mechanically significant for three decades.
