Mandatory Friendship Shackles

Mandatory Friendship Shackles was released in 2017 as part of the Unstable set for Magic: The Gathering. As a 'silver-bordered' set, Unstable was designed by Wizards of the Coast to prioritize humor and experimental mechanics that would not function within the traditional, tournament-legal rules of the game. The card itself parodies the concept of forced social interaction, utilizing the set's signature whimsical aesthetic to explore the boundaries of player agency.

The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who employed a vibrant, expressive art style that emphasizes the absurd nature of the equipment. Within the context of the set, the design aimed to create social friction and forced cooperation between opponents, reflecting the overarching theme of chaotic, community-driven gameplay that the Unstable expansion sought to foster. It remains a notable example of the creative freedom afforded to the design team when creating cards intended exclusively for casual play environments.
