Where it came from
Mantle of the Ancients was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Fallout Commander deck series. The card was specifically included in the Science! preconstructed deck, which drew heavily from the franchise’s futuristic technology and post-apocalyptic lore. Its mechanics and art were designed to reflect the scavenging nature of the series, where characters imbue their gear with salvaged relics and ancient technical knowledge.
The card’s design captures the aesthetic of the series by depicting an ornate, wasteland-inspired garment that provides a mechanical benefit reflecting the endurance of the player. As part of a collaborative set between Wizards of the Coast and Bethesda, the card aimed to bridge the gap between traditional trading card game mechanics and the RPG elements central to the Fallout video game franchise, receiving positive attention from both Magic players and fans of the source material for its thematic resonance.
