Where it came from
Mantle of the Ancients was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Fallout Commander set, a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Bethesda Softworks. The card was designed to reflect the scavenging and survivalist themes of the Fallout franchise, mechanically representing the act of equipping a survivor with powerful post-apocalyptic gear found in the wasteland.
The artwork, illustrated by Billy Christian, leans into the series' aesthetic of retro-futuristic salvage, depicting a character draped in scavenged armor and artifacts. The card was well-received by the Commander community for its utility in 'Voltron' style decks, which focus on buffing a single creature to victory, effectively translating the iconic 'Lone Wanderer' trope of the video games into tabletop gameplay.
