Where it came from
Martial Impetus was released in 2021 as part of the Commander expansion set for Strixhaven: School of Mages, specifically featured in the Silverquill Statement preconstructed deck. This cycle of enchantment cards, known as the 'Impetus' cycle, was designed to introduce political elements to the Commander format by forcing affected creatures to attack opponents other than the controller, while simultaneously providing a buff to the creature's power and toughness.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the thematic aesthetic of the Silverquill college—which centers on the duality of light and shadow and the power of the spoken word—to depict the essence of magically goading a creature into battle. Within the community, the card is recognized for its utility in 'goad' strategies, where players aim to disrupt the board state by forcing opponents' creatures into disadvantageous combat encounters.
