Where it came from
Changing Loyalty was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set. The card was designed to support the mechanics of the Silverquill college, a faction within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse that emphasizes the manipulation of social structures, debate, and eloquence. It functions as an enchantment that rewards players for political maneuvering and shifting alliances during multiplayer games.
The card features artwork by illustrator Ilse Gort, who captured the aesthetic of the Strixhaven aesthetic through a focus on the refined, academic atmosphere of the institution. The design team created this card to provide Commander players with a tool for reactive board control, encouraging interactive gameplay and strategic redirection rather than direct combat. It was received by the player community as a thematic fit for the Silverquill identity, praised for its ability to influence the table dynamic.
