Provenance

Where it came from

Master Decoy first appeared in the Mercadian Masques expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1999, intended to introduce mechanics centered on the flavor of deception and political intrigue within the setting of the plane of Mercadia. Its design, illustrated by Pete Venters, reflects the theme of urban subterfuge prevalent in the set, depicting a character capable of manipulating combat states by forcing creatures to tap, effectively removing them from tactical utility.

The Eighth Edition printing, released in 2003, served as a core set reprint. This iteration was part of the first modern-frame core set, marking a significant visual shift for the game as it transitioned away from the original 1993-era card frame. The card was received as a functional utility piece in limited play formats during both its initial release and its core set tenure, valued for its ability to neutralize threats in white-aligned decks.
