Where it came from
Master Decoy was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to emphasize tactical combat and interaction, introducing mechanics like the 'buyback' ability. The card fits into a thematic tradition of white-aligned defensive units, designed to manipulate combat by forcing creatures to attack, thereby exposing them to blocks or specific countermeasures.
The card features artwork by Mike Dringenberg, a prominent illustrator known for his significant contributions to The Sandman series. Dringenberg’s aesthetic for the piece captures the deceptive nature of the creature, utilizing a shadowed, atmospheric style that was characteristic of the late-nineties Magic art direction. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for limited-format play, providing players with a repeatable method for controlling the board state during the combat phase.
