Master Decoy

Master Decoy first appeared in the Mercadian Masques set in 1999, designed to showcase the tap-down mechanics prevalent in white color-aligned cards. The character depicted is a member of the Rebels, a faction defined by their ability to recruit one another from the library, fitting the set's strategic focus on resource deployment and battlefield manipulation. Its inclusion in the 2014 Duel Decks: Speed vs. Cunning release provided an updated frame and new art, recontextualizing the card as a tool for the Cunning deck to stymie aggressive opponents.

The art for the Duel Decks version was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, who sought to capture the nimble, tactical nature of the creature. The design emphasizes the character's swift movement and deceptive posture, aligning with the deck's overarching theme of outmaneuvering an opponent rather than relying solely on raw power. Within the competitive landscape of the time, the card was viewed as a solid utility creature, valued for its low casting cost and consistent ability to neutralize key threats during the combat phase.
