Where it came from
Aeve, Progenitor Ooze was introduced in the 2021 set Modern Horizons 2, a product designed specifically to inject powerful and nostalgic mechanics into the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. The card utilizes the storm keyword, a high-variance ability that rewards players for casting multiple spells in a single turn, reflecting the set's focus on complex interactions and engine-building.
The character design and illustration were handled by artist Campbell White. The visual direction emphasizes the amorphous, biological nature of the Ooze, utilizing vibrant greens and chaotic textures to match the card's mechanical identity as a creature that replicates itself exponentially. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its potential to create overwhelming board states in casual and competitive Commander formats alike.
