Where it came from
Family Reunion was released in November 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to reflect the set's central narrative themes, which focus on the discovery of a subterranean civilization and the emotional weight of ancestral legacies. Within the game's mechanics, it serves as a white-aligned spell representing the reunion of long-separated groups, fitting the expansion's emphasis on exploration and kinship.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the vibrant, lush aesthetic characteristic of the Ixalan plane. By depicting a heartfelt moment of return amidst the backdrop of the underground world, the design seeks to ground the high-fantasy stakes of the set in a grounded, human experience. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its thematic resonance with the set's core storyline and its specific utility in limited play formats.
