Where it came from
Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest was first released in 2015 as part of the Commander 2015 set, designed for the Magic: The Gathering tabletop trading card game. It features the Kraul, a race of insectoid beings from the Ravnica plane who occupy the subterranean levels of the city. The creature's mechanics center on the sacrifice of permanents, forcing opponents to experience a weakening effect whenever the controller sacrifices their own resources.
The artwork for this card was created by Chase Stone, who illustrated the Kraul Death Priest to emphasize its imposing, multi-limbed, and skeletal aesthetic. The design reflects the Kraul's role as both a spiritual leader and a scavenger within the lore, specifically highlighting the death-adjacent themes common to the Golgari Swarm faction. The card has been well-regarded by players for its synergy with token-based and sacrifice-heavy strategies, maintaining a consistent presence in Commander deck building since its inception.
