Where it came from
Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest was released in 2015 as part of the Plunder the Graves deck in the Commander 2015 set. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was notable for introducing cards specifically tailored for the Commander format, focusing on graveyard synergies and the Jund color identity of black, red, and green.
The card was illustrated by Svetlin Velinov, a veteran artist for the game known for his evocative portrayals of monstrous figures. The design focuses on a Kraul, a race of insectoid beings from the plane of Ravnica, emphasizing their hive-like nature and affinity for decay. It was received favorably by players for its powerful trigger that grants +1/+1 counters to all creatures whenever a permanent is sacrificed, making it a centerpiece for sacrifice-themed strategies.
