Where it came from
The Mental Journey Art Series card was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This specific line of cards was designed as a collectible parallel set, focusing entirely on the high-fidelity artwork commissioned for the main set. These cards do not feature standard game mechanics, instead serving as a gallery-style showcase for the intricate illustrations that define the visual identity of the Modern Horizons series.
The artwork for Mental Journey was created by artist Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem known for her painterly style and character-driven compositions. In this piece, Villeneuve aimed to capture a sense of cerebral exploration and ethereal movement, utilizing soft lighting and flowing forms to represent the titular mental state. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the collecting community for its aesthetic clarity and the high quality of the print finish, which distinguishes these art cards from traditional game pieces.
