Where it came from
Mentor of the Meek was first introduced in the Innistrad set in 2011, designed as a white creature that rewards players for filling their battlefield with smaller units. The card embodies the color white's philosophy of strength in numbers and communal support, allowing a player to draw a card whenever a smaller creature enters the battlefield. This version, appearing in the 2022 Starter Commander Decks, features the original utility-focused design that cemented its place as a staple in low-curve creature-heavy strategies within the Commander format.
The illustration by Greg Staples captures the mentor figure as a scholarly, approachable character, emphasizing the theme of guidance and academic growth. In the context of Commander gameplay, the card is widely regarded for its reliable card draw engine, which is a rare and highly valued capability for mono-white decks. Its inclusion in the 2022 preconstructed decks helped introduce newer players to essential deck-building mechanics, reinforcing the card's enduring popularity among those who favor synergistic playstyles.
