Where it came from
Mentor's Guidance was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to reflect the academic and pedagogical themes of the set, specifically highlighting the relationship between students and the faculty at the university for magical learning. Mechanically, it serves as a common-rarity sorcery intended to represent the process of knowledge acquisition and preparation through card draw and scrying.
The artwork for this piece was created by illustrator Randy Vargas. In keeping with the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Strixhaven campus, the illustration focuses on the quiet, studious atmosphere of the school's library, capturing a moment of scholarly focus. The design was received by the player base as a functional utility tool within the Limited environment of the set, praised for its straightforward ability to smooth out a player's draw while reinforcing the set's overarching identity as a school of wizardry.
