Provenance

Where it came from

The Mercenary token was released as part of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2024. Designed to complement specific cards within the set that create creature tokens, this piece serves as a tactical representation of the theme—a world of high-stakes outlaws, desert landscapes, and frontier justice that defines the plane of Thunder Junction.

The visual identity of this token was crafted to align with the rugged, Western-inspired aesthetic of the set. Illustrators for the token series worked to capture the gritty, dangerous essence of the plane's inhabitants, focusing on a design that feels both distinct and integrated into the broader visual language of the game. It was received by the player base as a functional and thematic component of the set's unique gameplay mechanics.
