Where it came from
The Merfolk token was released in 2023 as part of the token lineup for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, a set centered on the exploration of a subterranean world beneath the plane of Ixalan. In this setting, the Merfolk—specifically the River Heralds—are depicted as deep-sea guardians tasked with protecting the core of the world. The token was designed to represent the creatures created by various spells and abilities within the set's mechanics, serving as a functional piece for gameplay.
The artistic direction for this token follows the set's lush, bioluminescent aesthetic, emphasizing the alien beauty of the underground oceans. The illustration captures the aquatic features and vibrant, iridescent scales characteristic of the Ixalan Merfolk, aiming to ground them as a powerful, mystical force. It was received as a cohesive addition to the set’s broader world-building, blending traditional fantasy tropes with the unique subterranean motifs defined by Wizards of the Coast for this expansion.
