Where it came from
The Merfolk Assassin was originally released in the 1997 set Visions, but this specific iteration hails from the 2006 Time Spiral Timeshifted subset. This unique series was designed as a nostalgic tribute to Magic: The Gathering's history, reprinting select cards with their original art and the classic 1990s card frame, but using the modern purple-colored expansion symbol to distinguish them as part of the Time Spiral block.
The original card illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the early years of the game. His design sought to capture a classic, menacing underwater predator, grounding the creature in the high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the game’s first decade. When these were re-released in 2006, they were received warmly by veteran players who appreciated the aesthetic callback to the game's origins, making them a prized inclusion for those collecting the distinct Timeshifted set.
