Where it came from
Merfolk Branchwalker was released in 2017 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Ixalan. The card was designed as a key component for tribal synergy decks, utilizing the explore mechanic to help players smooth out their draws or grow the creature's power early in the game. Its inclusion in the set reflects the vibrant, Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic of the Plane of Ixalan, which emphasized exploration, seafaring, and the conflict between various factions like the River Heralds.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the nimble and scouting nature of the Merfolk within the dense, sun-dappled jungles of the setting. The artwork depicts the character actively navigating the terrain, emphasizing the creature's role as a scout. It was well-received by the player base for its efficiency, quickly becoming a staple in competitive Standard formats during its tenure, appreciated for its reliability and its thematic alignment with the set's central mechanics.
