Merfolk of the Pearl Trident

Merfolk of the Pearl Trident first appeared in the Portal set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 1997. This set was designed as an introductory product to bring new players into the world of Magic: The Gathering, utilizing simplified mechanics and a focus on creature-heavy gameplay to lower the barrier to entry for beginners. The card was specifically intended to function as an entry-level blue creature, embodying the classic design archetype of a low-cost, sea-themed unit typical of the color's early identity.

The original illustration for this card was crafted by artist Rob Alexander, whose work was a staple of the era. Alexander leaned into the traditional fantasy aesthetic of the late nineties, opting for a clean, representational style that highlighted the creature's environment. While Portal as a set received mixed reactions from seasoned tournament players at the time due to its simplified rules, the card has since been reprinted across various supplemental products, including The List, cementing its status as a foundational piece of Magic's visual and mechanical history.
