What it does

Most human scholars believe that Merfolk are the survivors of sunken Atlantis, humans adapted to the water. Merfolk, however, believe that humans sprang forth from Merfolk who adapted themselves in order to explore their last frontier.

Provenance

Where it came from

Merfolk of the Pearl Trident, printed as card number 68 in the 1994 Summer Magic expansion, remains one of the most enigmatic pieces in the history of Magic: The Gathering. Often referred to as 'Edgar' by collectors, this set was produced as a corrected print run to address the significant color and rarity errors found in the original Revised Edition. Due to a warehouse flood and a subsequent recall, the vast majority of this print run was destroyed, making the surviving cards some of the rarest and most sought-after specimens from the game's early years.

The artwork, consistent with the original design by Christopher Rush, maintains the classic aesthetic of early 90s fantasy gaming. Like many cards in the set, the design sought to bring a more vibrant color saturation to the game, though the printing process resulted in several unique quirks and variations that distinguish these copies from their Revised counterparts. While the set was initially intended to be a standard release, its limited distribution solidified its status as a cornerstone of vintage collection, prized primarily for its historical scarcity rather than its competitive utility.
