Where it came from
Merfolk Windrobber was released in 2020 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar Rising, which marked the third return to the adventure-themed plane of Zendikar. The card represents a recurring stylistic motif in the set, emphasizing the synergy between rogue creatures and the game's mill mechanic, designed to encourage aggressive, tempo-based gameplay strategies in both limited and constructed formats.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Manuel Castañón. He aimed to depict the unique anatomical traits of Zendikar's merfolk, specifically focusing on their aquatic, amphibious nature and their tendency to lurk in the ruins of their world. Upon release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency as a low-cost, flying creature that provided consistent card selection in blue-black rogue archetypes.
