What it does
Whenever a permanent becomes untapped, that permanent's controller mills a card.
"I now believe the strange orb was some kind of Thran security device. Supporting this theory, I can no longer recall where I found it."— Tocasia, journal entry

Where it came from
Mesmeric Orb was originally released in the 2002 expansion set Odyssey, designed as part of a cycle of artifacts that encourage unconventional win conditions. The card's design focuses on the mechanic of 'mill,' forcing players to discard the top cards of their library into the graveyard. It was crafted by Wizards of the Coast design teams to support graveyard-centric strategies, which were a central theme of the Odyssey block, providing players with a tool to manipulate library depth and fuel recursion effects.
The 2022 Retro Artifacts version, appearing in The Brothers' War as collector number 94z, reimagines the original aesthetic with the classic frame style used in the early days of Magic: The Gathering. This visual treatment was intended to evoke nostalgia among long-term players, celebrating the game's history during its 30th-anniversary celebration. The artwork maintains the eerie, hypnotic atmosphere of the original illustration, designed to visually represent the psychological toll of the card's mill effect on a player's library.
