Where it came from
Mesmeric Trance was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Ice Age was notable for being the first standalone set not requiring the original base set to play, introducing a thematic focus on snowy landscapes and survivalist mechanics that defined the game's second year.
The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, whose illustrative style during the mid-nineties contributed significantly to the distinct fantasy aesthetic of the era. The design captures the atmospheric, mystical tone of the set, though the card itself is historically noted for its niche utility and complex activation requirements, which limited its widespread adoption in competitive tournament play.
