Where it came from
Mesmerizing Benthid was released in January 2019 as part of the Ravnica Allegiance set, the second expansion in the third return to the Ravnica plane. Set in the underwater depths of the Simic Combine’s bio-laboratories, the card serves as a thematic representation of the faction's focus on genetic modification and maritime evolution within the cityscape.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Voss opted for a bioluminescent aesthetic, emphasizing the creature's ethereal, hypnotic nature to match its mechanical ability of creating tokens that grant hexproof. Upon its release, it was noted for its utility in defensive strategies, particularly in limited formats, where its combination of reach and protection made it a distinct tactical presence.
