Where it came from
The Snow-Covered Island, numbered 371 in the Ice Age expansion released by Wizards of the Coast in 1995, represents a fundamental shift in the design of Magic: The Gathering. As the first set to introduce the snow-covered land mechanic, Ice Age sought to immerse players in a frozen, post-apocalyptic setting where environmental conditions directly impacted spell effectiveness and creature resilience.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Quinton Hoover, who was highly regarded for his stylized, ethereal approach to the game's early aesthetic. By emphasizing cold, jagged landscapes and muted blue palettes, Hoover’s illustration established the visual identity for the snow-covered biome, creating an iconic piece that remains a staple for collectors interested in the foundational years of the trading card game.
