Where it came from
Messenger Falcons was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn set, the final expansion in the Shards of Alara block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique at the time as the first in the game's history to consist entirely of multicolored cards, reflecting the theme of the world of Alara reuniting after being split into five distinct shards. The card was designed to function within the mechanics of the Bant shard, which emphasized cooperation, white-blue-green color identity, and creatures with entering-the-battlefield abilities.
The card illustration was created by artist Christopher Moeller, who captured the image of the birds mid-flight against a backdrop consistent with the lush, structured aesthetic of Bant. Moeller, a veteran contributor to the game, aimed to convey the utility and grace of the creatures as messengers in a high-fantasy setting. Upon its release, the card was viewed by players as a solid limited-format resource, appreciated for its card-drawing ability and its contribution to board presence during the Alara Reborn draft environment.
