Metagamer

The Metagamer card originated as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. These cards were distributed at events like MagicFest to provide players with a glimpse into the internal design process. They are famously characterized by their 'playtest' aesthetic, featuring simple black-and-white layouts and a distinctive watermarked backing, intended to look like mockups used by developers before final art and layout decisions are finalized.

The design of the Metagamer leans into the meta-humor inherent to collectible card games, with mechanics that interact with the external environment of competitive play. Like others in this set, it was never intended for standard tournament play, serving instead as a novelty collector’s item that highlights the experimental side of game design. It reflects the philosophy of the R&D team at the time, who sought to capture the feeling of early-stage prototyping while honoring the community's engagement with the competitive metagame.
