Where it came from
Ral's Vanguard was released in 2019 as part of the Mystery Booster playtest cards, a collection of experimental designs distributed at Magic: The Gathering events. These cards were created by Wizards of the Coast design teams to explore unconventional mechanics that did not fit into standard set releases, specifically testing the 'vanguard' concept in a paper format. The card features a monochromatic, prototype-style aesthetic intended to signal its non-tournament-legal status and its role as a design sandbox for the development team.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose artwork characterizes the Planeswalker Ral Zarek in a bold, sketch-like style. The design aimed to capture a unique gameplay experience by allowing players to utilize a Vanguard emblem that provided passive bonuses, a concept historically reserved for digital or specialty products. Because these cards were produced in limited quantities for convention play, they have since become highly sought after by collectors of Magic: The Gathering's history and its developmental evolution.
