Where it came from
Sarkhan's Unsealing was released as part of the Core Set 2019 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to be more accessible for newer players while still offering mechanical depth, focusing heavily on the narrative arc of the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol as he traversed time to save the dragon Ugin. The card itself represents a key moment in that storyline, depicting the unleashing of immense draconic power.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Daarken, a long-time contributor to the game known for his dramatic and high-contrast fantasy illustrations. The design aimed to visually capture the sheer scale and destructive energy of large dragon creatures entering the fray. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but effective build-around enchantment, finding its primary utility in casual and commander formats where players prioritize high-mana creatures.
