Where it came from
Midnight Ritual was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was inspired by the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its complex socio-political intrigue, maritime commerce, and a unique aesthetic blending steampunk influences with traditional high fantasy. This specific card reflects the set's central themes of sacrifice and the manipulation of game resources to trigger powerful effects.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Kev Walker, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community whose distinct, visceral style helped define the look of many cards from the late nineties. In the context of the game's mechanics, the card was designed to allow players to exile creatures from their graveyard to create token creatures, a strategic choice that emphasized the game's ongoing focus on graveyard interaction. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche utility card, characteristic of the experimental design philosophies present throughout the Masques block.
