Where it came from
Midnight Ritual was released in 2007 as part of the Tenth Edition core set for Magic: The Gathering. As a core set, Tenth Edition was designed to provide a foundational pool of cards for both new and veteran players, serving as a bridge between more complex expansions while maintaining the game's established mechanical identity. The card itself, originally debuting in the Saviors of Kamigawa set, functions as a niche graveyard-recursion effect, intended to provide strategic depth to black-aligned decks that utilize sacrifice mechanics.
The artwork for this iteration was rendered by artist Jaime Jones, whose contribution fits the thematic aesthetic of the Kamigawa plane's spiritual and supernatural motifs. Jones utilized a dark, atmospheric palette to emphasize the ritualistic nature of the spell, focusing on the visual storytelling of necromancy. Upon its inclusion in Tenth Edition, the card was received as a functional utility piece, appreciated by players who favored flavor-heavy deck building and specific graveyard-based synergies.
