Mindless Automaton was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Exodus served as the final set of the Rath Cycle, a narrative block that shifted the game's focus toward a dark, subterranean conflict. Mechanically, the card was designed as a colorless creature that offered players a strategic trade-off: spending mana to draw cards at the cost of placing +1/+1 counters on the automaton, reflecting the theme of a sentient yet hollow construct.

The card's distinctive aesthetic was captured by illustrator Brian Snõddy, whose work throughout the late 1990s was characterized by a clean, graphic style that contrasted with the more painterly, high-fantasy tone common to the era. Snõddy’s depiction of the Automaton emphasized its mechanical nature through rigid lines and muted metallic tones, creating a sense of cold, utilitarian detachment.
