Where it came from
Show of Valor was released in July 2012 as part of the Magic 2013 core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Like many cards in the core set, it was designed to serve as a functional common, providing a straightforward combat trick that grants a creature a power and toughness boost based on its existing stats. This type of card is a staple in Limited formats, intended to help newer players understand the basic mechanics of combat math and permanent buffs.
The card features illustration by Kev Walker, a prolific artist who has contributed a vast amount of imagery to the game since the 1990s. Walker’s work for the set leaned into the high-fantasy aesthetic traditional to the White color identity, depicting a valiant soldier infused with magical light. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a standard utility piece, prized for its ability to save creatures from damage-based removal while acting as a surprise offensive maneuver during combat.
