Where it came from
Mindless Conscription was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was specifically designed to introduce powerful, high-synergy cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing the standard legal rotation of the core sets. This card was conceptualized to support archetypes centered on graveyard manipulation and resource acceleration, common themes within the set's broader mechanical identity.
The artwork, illustrated by Wisnu Tan, depicts a haunting scene of ethereal figures being drawn into a collective, necrotic force. Tan’s contribution focuses on the atmospheric dread of the Eldrazi influence, a recurring narrative element within the set. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its efficiency in facilitating complex board states, aligning with the design goal of creating high-impact utility cards that challenge traditional deck-building constraints in the Modern format.
