Where it came from
Mindless Automaton was originally introduced in the Exodus set in 1998, designed as a colorless utility creature that allowed players to exchange cards for potential advantages. Its return in the 2020 Commander Legends set served to provide players with a repeatable card-draw engine that fits into any color identity, maintaining the mechanical identity of an construct that grows in power as it burns through resources.
The art for the Commander Legends printing was crafted by Donato Giancola, who updated the visual aesthetic of the automaton to fit the set's high-fantasy, draft-centric environment. The illustration focuses on the cold, clockwork nature of the construct, emphasizing its role as a faceless, tireless tool for its master, a common theme in the lore surrounding these artificial servants within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.
