Where it came from
Mind's Eye was first introduced in the 2003 expansion Mirrodin, designed as a powerful utility artifact that rewards players for card draw. The version identified here is the 'Retro Artifact' treatment from The Brothers' War, a special subset of cards released in 2022 to commemorate the history of Magic: The Gathering. These cards were designed to evoke the aesthetic of early 1990s card frames, catering to player nostalgia by marrying modern game mechanics with the visual style of the game's formative years.
The illustration for this specific printing was created by Daniel Ljunggren, who maintained the utilitarian, contemplative aesthetic established by the original artist, Greg Staples. The design focuses on the theme of infinite observation and magical insight, fitting the Brothers' War narrative of an era defined by intense, artifact-heavy conflict. The retro frame treatment was well-received by the community for its clean, classic look, serving as a popular inclusion for collectors who prefer the vintage presentation of powerful cards.
