"Without Urza's ingenuity, the wings would never have borne weight. Without Mishra's courage, we would never have known the machine's true potential. I hope this persuades them to work together more."— Tocasia, journal entry

Where it came from
The Ornithopter, a staple of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, was originally printed in the 1994 Antiquities expansion. It was conceived as a zero-mana artifact creature, designed to embody the early aesthetic of the game's artifact-heavy lore surrounding the war between brothers Urza and Mishra. This particular version, featured as part of The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts sub-series, pays homage to that original debut while utilizing the distinct, vintage-inspired card frame that defined the game's earliest years.
The illustration style for this reissued card aims to capture the classic, high-fantasy technical blueprints of early Magic lore, emphasizing the mechanical and makeshift nature of the titular flying machine. Its design is a deliberate nod to the game's history, intended for both veteran players nostalgic for the 1990s meta and new collectors interested in the artifact-centric narrative of Dominaria’s past. It remains a widely recognized icon of the game's deep history, celebrated for its unique utility in competitive play despite its fragile stats.
