Where it came from
Mindsplice Apparatus was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Phyrexia: All Will Be One. The card is set within the world of New Phyrexia, a plane consumed by a metallic, biomechanical infection that seeks to unify all life under the perfection of the Phyrexian collective. As a piece of Phyrexian machinery, its design reflects the set's core aesthetic of industrial horror, blending organic anatomy with cold, calculating gears and razor-sharp hardware.
The card was illustrated by David Rapoza, who leaned into the surreal, grotesque sensibilities associated with Phyrexian technology. Mechanically, the card was designed to support spell-based strategies by proliferating oil counters, a central mechanic of the set that represents the spread of the Phyrexian influence. It was received by players as a potent build-around artifact, valued for its ability to reduce the cost of instant and sorcery spells as the game progresses.
