Mindstab Thrull

Mindstab Thrull was released in 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set, the fourth expansion in the game's history, explored the crumbling sociopolitical landscape of the continent of Sarpadia, a world defined by the exhaustion of resources and the desperation of its various factions. The Thrulls were designed as artificial, subservient creatures created by the Order of the Ebon Hand to perform menial labor and serve as conduits for dark magic, reflecting the set's grim themes of exploitation and decay.

The card illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was a prolific contributor during the early years of the game. Maddocks utilized a distinct, textured style that emphasized the grotesque anatomy of the Thrulls, aiming to evoke a sense of unease and biological horror fitting for the Ebon Hand's occult experimentation. While Fallen Empires initially received mixed feedback from players due to its perceived power level relative to earlier sets, the atmospheric world-building and character design of the Thrull race have since earned it a dedicated following among collectors of classic Magic artwork.
