Provenance

Where it came from

Raiding Party was released in November 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore the lore of the dying continent of Sarpadia, focusing on five warring factions, including the Orcs of the Foothills. The card reflects the expansion's theme of tribal warfare and limited resources, which defined the tactical landscape of the game during its early years.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators for the game. His work on this piece captures the raw, chaotic energy characteristic of Orcish creatures in early Magic sets, utilizing a dark and gritty aesthetic that was a hallmark of the Fallen Empires artistic direction. The design was received by players as a niche, thematic inclusion for red-aligned decks during a period when the game was rapidly expanding its mechanical and narrative scope.
