Where it came from
The Mirrorwing Dragon was released as part of the Eldritch Moon set in 2016, specifically appearing as a promotional card for the Prerelease events. The card was designed to highlight the set's themes of transformation and corruption, reflecting the eldritch horror aesthetic inspired by H.P. Lovecraft that defined the return to the plane of Innistrad. As a rare creature, it introduced a unique mechanical twist by allowing players to copy spells cast on it to other creatures they control, a design intended to create high-impact, complex board states during limited gameplay.
The artwork for the card was created by Svetlin Velinov, a veteran illustrator for the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Velinov was tasked with depicting a dragon overtaken by the mutagenic influences of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul, resulting in a design that emphasizes crystalline growths and distorted anatomy. The promo version of the card features the distinct set symbol and a foil treatment, which became a sought-after aesthetic for players looking to enhance their decks with thematic flair during the transition from the base set to the expansion's endgame.
