Where it came from
Dark Salvation was originally printed as a rare card in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Eldritch Moon. This promo version, numbered 87s, was distributed through the Friday Night Magic program, a global initiative designed to encourage local game store community building. The card features unique foil treatment and the expansion symbol indicative of the set, positioning it as a distinct collectible for players of the black-aligned Zombie tribal decks prevalent in the Innistrad block meta.
The art for this card was created by Daarken, a veteran illustrator known for his dark and visceral aesthetic, which aligns with the horror-themed setting of Eldritch Moon. The design intent was to capture the card's mechanical ability to summon a horde of Zombie tokens while simultaneously weakening an opponent's creature. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its scalability in the late game, becoming a staple in various Commander and casual formats.
