Where it came from
Misfortune Teller was released as part of the New Capenna Commander Promos in 2022, a set designed to support the release of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the art deco aesthetic of a 1920s-inspired urban landscape, emphasizing the five criminal families that rule the city. This particular card was intended to provide players with a thematic utility piece that fits the 'Obscura' family identity, which centers on manipulation and information control.
The art was crafted by artist Volkan Baga, whose work frequently features the dramatic lighting and detailed character portraits found in modern fantasy card design. In this piece, Baga captures the card’s underlying theme of tactical foresight and impending doom, using sharp contrasts to evoke the noir atmosphere of New Capenna. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Commander formats, as its ability to rearrange the top of a deck provides a reliable way to filter resources during gameplay.
