Where it came from
Mishra, Claimed by Gix was released as part of the 2022 The Brothers' War expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This specific version features unique borderless art designed to emphasize the corrupting influence of the Phyrexians on the titular character, a central figure in the long-running lore of the game's setting. The card depicts Mishra's tragic descent, capturing the dark, mechanical fusion that defines his ultimate fate within the series' narrative.
The illustrative work for this series was handled by artist Kekai Kotaki, who utilized a visceral style to highlight the transformation from a skilled artificer into an instrument of Gix, the Phyrexian Praetor. Within the community, this card and its associated promo set were well-regarded for their thematic cohesion, successfully bridging the gap between the game's historic 'Antiquities' era narrative and modern visual storytelling techniques.
