Where it came from
Mishra's Onslaught was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War, which revisited the foundational conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra that defined the game's early lore. The card depicts a moment of industrial-scale warfare typical of the set's retro-futuristic, artifact-heavy aesthetic, focusing on the mechanical forces marshaled by the antagonist, Mishra.
The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Darek Zabrocki, who sought to capture the overwhelming scale of the machine armies described in the game's history. By utilizing a color palette dominated by harsh ochres and rusted metallics, Zabrocki emphasized the brutal, attritional nature of the conflict. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition to artifact-themed decks, appreciated by players for its thematic resonance with the overarching narrative of the set.
